After an earthquake, regardless of whether a soil profile liquifies or not, the soils above and below ground water table experience a seismic compression or sometimes called dynamic settlement. The calculation of dynamic soil settlement below the GWT is very straightforword. However, the dynamic settlement above the GWT is very tedious and complex.

This spreadsheet will compute this seismic compression in just few minutes.

1) Bearing capacity (considers soils data, footing geometry and structural loadings)-This program works in fps or si units and as an added bonus also outputs geotechnical criteria for the design of retaining walls. I use it every week. It can handle continuous footings, rectangular, square and circular footings. It can handle biaxial moments, lateral loads and vertical loads. It incorporates GWT level as well. This spreadsheet alone is worth more than $25.

2) Settlement of continuous footings(wall footings) in cohesive soils(clays or plastic silts). No more hand calculations of settlement of soils and associated time consumption. The bousinnesq stress distribution is assumed(more conservative) for all the settlement programs. output is the settlement of the continuous footings up to a depth of 3B below the base of the footings.

3) Settlement of square footings in cohesive soils-similar to program 2) but this program is for column footings. It is also applicable to settlement of Mat footings on cohesive soils. By using program 2 and 3, the engineer can quickly size the footings for equal settlements and reduce the differential settlement aspect of a building foundation design.

4) Settlement of circular (column) footings in cohesive soils. This program is ideal either for computing settlement of round column footings, settlement of tank foundations, and settlement of circular mat or Raft foundations in cohesive soils.

5) Geotechnical capacity of driven concrete piles in cohesionless soils. this program is ideal for either prestressed concrete pile or reinforced concrete pile capacity. You can input width or diameter of the pile, desired lengths and soil properties. The spreadsheet outputs both the compression and tension capacity. worksheet 2 has a chart which can be used for plotting pile capacity vs depth for 3 different pile sizes.
